THE 44 year-old-man arrested with a 14-year-old girl in Sibu, Sarawak for dumping a newborn baby boy into a vegetable basket in the streets will also be charged with statutory rape.

Investigations have revealed that he is the biological father and the girl the mother, and they both abandoned the baby shortly after birth, said Sibu police chief Zulkipli Suhaili.

"The man is being probed for baby dumping and also statutory rape of the girl.

"The man is also known to the father of the girl," said Zulkipli.

Yesterday, police arrested both the girl and the man for allegedly dumping the newborn baby boy into a vegetable basket in the back lanes.

The duo have been placed under remand pending further probes.

The girl is being probed for dumping the newborn.

The baby boy was discovered by the public on Oct 29 in a vegetable basket along the backlanes of Jalan Tong Sang.

"The baby weighs 1.48kg and is believed to have been born about 24 hours ago.

"The baby has been sent to the Sibu Hospital and is being cared for in the ward," Zulkipli said.

The baby still had his umbilical cord and uterus tissues attached.- October 31, 2024
