THE FIRST dedicated cardiac and vascular hospital opened its doors officially yesterday in Penang after the Yang di - Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abul Razak visited the facility on Peel Avenue.

Located beside the Island Hospital, the Northern Heart Hospital (NHH) represents a testament to Penang's elevation as a preferred medical tourism destination in the region.

It was set up specifically to cater to both local and international patients.

Among those at the official launch were, NHH chairman Tuanku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz, its chief executive officer Kelen Leong Choy Fun and its consultant cardiologist Dr Tan Chiang Soo, as well as state executive councillor for health Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.

Penang executive councillor for housing, Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo was also present.

NHH aims to provide specialised and comprehensive care for patients with cardiovascular conditions, offering a wide array of advanced cardiac, vascular, and cardiothoracic diagnostic and treatment services.

The hospital boasts cutting-edge medical technology, including advanced diagnostic imaging, cardiac catheterisation laboratories, high-tech operating theatres, comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation and comfortable patient rooms and suites.

Gooi highlighted the transformative impact of NHH on healthcare in Penang.

“The launch of this heart hospital marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of cardiovascular care in Penang and Malaysia. This facility not only enhances our ability to address complex cardiac conditions locally but also solidifies Penang’s standing as a premier destination for medical tourism,” he said.

Gooi emphasised the synergy between healthcare and tourism, stating that Penang’s blend of medical expertise and cultural charm attracts patients from across Southeast Asia.

Penang accounts for 45% of Malaysia’s medical tourism revenue as of 2024.

Leong meanwhile, reaffirmed the dedication to addressing cardiovascular health challenges in the region.

Leong also highlighted NHH’s unique operating model, where specialists are partners in the hospital, ensuring personalised, high-quality care for every patient.

Meanwhile, the Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH) is offering 100 free cataract surgeries to needy individuals in commemoration of its 100th anniversary celebration last year.

The initiative is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to community service and its mission to restore vision to those in need.

PAH chief executive officer Albin Phua expressed his deepest appreciation to St Nicholas Home for its unwavering support in this noble effort.

“We are proud to begin 2025 with a meaningful act of service, unveiling our ‘100 Free Cataract Surgeries’ initiative. Recognising the urgent need, we have simplified the application process. Applicants only need to present their MyKad for verification. Eligibility extends to beneficiaries of PeKa B40 programme, MySalam programme, or residents of non-governmental organisation (NGO) homes," said Phua. - January 22, 2025.
