KUALA LUMPUR – Youth activist Muhammad Aiman Hakim Zainal Ariffin, who was detained yesterday for allegedly insulting the royal insitution via Twitter, is expected to be released by this evening.

In a short video posted by Muda co-founder Amir Abdul Hadi, Aiman Hakim’s lawyer, Rajsurian Pillai, said the magistrate allowed only a one-day remand, despite the police requesting for four days following proceedings at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

“Aiman Hakim will be freed today before 6pm,” Rajsurian told reporters.

Rajsurian added that Aiman’s handphone had also been seized by the police for “forensic analysis” to determine who was behind the tweet and when it was posted.

“The suspect’s Twitter username and password was also given to the investigating officer to be handed over to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further probe.”

In an earlier tweet, Amir had said Aiman Hakim was apprehended after being summoned to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday afternoon.

Amir’s post had included the hashtag #BebasHakim (#FreeHakim) in a show of solidarity.

It is understood that the 27-year-old is being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Twitter, Aiman Hakim, whose handle is @AimanHkim, said he was called in for questioning by police at 10am yesterday, in relation to his tweet that allegedly insulted the royal institution.

However, it remains unclear which of Aiman Hakim’s tweets is being investigated. – The Vibes, June 23, 2021
