KAJANG – The Black Water Lake in Cheras is living up to its name in the most unfortunate way after it became a popular site for illegal dumping.
Kajang Municipal Council spokesman Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman said the issue has been going on for more than a month and the access road to the lakeside has been temporarily closed.
He told The Vibes’ sister portal Getaran that the council has sought help from the state Lands and Mines Office to identify the landowner for further action.
“Over the month, the council has detained six lorries laden with rubbish at the dumpsite. Perhaps due to the presence of enforcement officers, we are seeing less of the offenders. It is true that nearby residents have been complaining about the stench.”
A survey by Getaran found that much of the affected area is littered with bottles, gunny sacks, polystyrene containers and plastic waste.
Earlier, Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had ordered the Environment Department (DoE) to investigate complaints filed by Bandar Mahkota Cheras residents about the stench.
He added that the information provided by the complainants were given to DoE director-general for further action. – The Vibes, June 1, 2022
