GEORGE TOWN – A 66-year-old wheelchair-bound man bravely fought off a snatch thief with the help of his companion who came to his aid in the Little India area here on Deepavali last Saturday.

The 9.30am incident along China Street was captured on a nearby CCTV camera belonging to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), leading to the assailant’s arrest.

Although the disabled man and his female companion suffered injuries, the suspect was also hurt and was apprehended by the police an hour later.

The suspect had tried to grab the man’s bag and punch him on the face before escaping on a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice.

However, the 32-year-old suspect was arrested at Stewart Lane after the CCTV produced adequate footage to help the cops trace him.

George Town district police chief Soffian Santong said the victim suffered injuries on his face as the suspect had punched him several times.

He said the victim on the wheelchair had fractured his right and left legs due to an earlier accident.

He said police also seized the motorcycle, which had been stolen, used in the incident.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had numerous drug-related records.

“The suspect was suffering from tuberculosis and found to have blood clots in the intestines. He has been admitted to the Penang Hospital for treatment,” said Soffian.

Police are looking for his accomplice who rode the motorbike. – The Vibes, November 17, 2020
