KUALA LUMPUR – The number of flood victims in Johor, Melaka, Kelantan, and Perak recorded an increase last night, while Selangor showed a decline in evacuees.
The floods in Penang have meanwhile receded after the last temporary evacuation centre in SK Lahar Yooi, which housed 37 people from eight families, closed yesterday.
In Johor, the District Disaster Management Committee informed that the number of flash flood victims placed at six centres in the Segamat, Kluang, Pontian, and Tangkak districts increased to 318 evacuees last night compared with 310 victims at 4pm.
The weather in several districts, including Batu Pahat, Johor Baru, and Pontian was reported to be cloudy.
In Melaka, the secretariat of the State Disaster Management Committee said flood victims at two centres in Alor Gajah increased to 51 people (16 families) last night, compared with 41 people from 12 families at 8am.
A total of 12 victims from six families were placed at the Kg Gadek community hall centre while the Durian Tunggal development and coordination committee hall centre housed 39 victims from 10 families.
“All the displaced are from Kg Gadek, Kg Bukit Tambun, Kg Bukit Balai, Kg Pulau, and Kg Belimbing, while one other area was also flooded in central Melaka, namely Taman Bukit Beruang Bestari, but no centre was opened,” he said.
In Kelantan, the InfoBencana portal of the Social Welfare Department said flood victim numbers were still rising as a total of 2,124 people from 713 families were accommodated in eight centres in Pasir Mas District as of 9pm, compared to 2,076 from 693 families in the evening.
Meanwhile, according to a report from the Public InfoBanjir, Sg Kelantan in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas had exceeded the warning level with a reading of 9.34m.
In Perak, as of 9pm yesterday, there were 254 victims at six centres, namely SK Changkat Lobak (Kerian); SM Abdul Rahman Talib and the Kg Piandang hall in Siputeh; Kg Jelapang, Kg Simpang Halt, and Kg Padang Temak.
SK Changkat Lobak recorded a slight increase to 34 victims yesterday evening, compared with 10 in the afternoon, with four more evacuees placed in the Kg Padang Tembak centre.
Meanwhile, the Kg Jelapang centre in the Larut Matang and Selama districts showed a downward trend, with only 12 people from two families compared with 40 earlier.
In Selangor, based on the InfoBencana website, victim numbers in the state continued to decline to 126 evacuees from 36 families last night, compared to 144 victims from 44 families in the evening.
Three centres are still operating compared with six yesterday morning at SK Sg Sireh, SKM Jeram, and SJKC Yuk Chih Batang Berjuntai. – Bernama, November 15, 2022
