GEORGE TOWN – Lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla has called for his proposed membership in Pejuang to be immediately scrapped.

In his letter made available to The Vibes, Haniff, who used to represent Pejuang president and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, requested party secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya to revoke his membership.

In the letter dated September 15, Haniff cited that he was willing to join the party earlier on the basis that he becomes the interim head of Penang Pejuang.

“But in view that the national headquarters had resolved the leadership issue of Penang Pejuang, it is best that Marzuki freeze the process of granting me a membership with Pejuang.”

Haniff did not cite why he preferred to no longer be part of Pejuang.

It was reported that the present Pejuang (Gerakan Tanah Air) chairman in Penang is Muhammad Farouk Abdullah with the coalition contesting in four parliamentary seats here at Balik Pulau, Kepala Batas, Permatang Pauh and Tasek Gelugor.

Earlier, Haniff had his application for a summary judgment in his RM12.5 million suit against Bersatu for alleged non-payment of legal fees dismissed by a high court in Kuala Lumpur.

High court judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir dismissed the application last May and ordered the counsel to pay RM3,000 in costs to Bersatu.

With this dismissal the matter will now go for a full trial to hear the merits of the case.

The civil trial is reportedly scheduled to take place from March 18 to 22 in 2024.

Haniff would reportedly also file an appeal against the court’s decision.

He filed the main suit against Bersatu in July 2021 whereby the learned counsel named the party, its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin and treasurer Datuk Mohamed Salleh Bajuri as the respondents. – The Vibes, November 18, 2022.
