[UPDATED] GE15: EC sets Tioman state seat poll on Dec 7

KUALA LUMPUR – Voting for the Tioman state seat will be on December 7, while nominations and early voting will be held on November 24 and December 3 respectively.

The Election Commission (EC) in a statement today said there will be a 13-day campaign period which will end at 11.59pm on December 6.

Voting for the Tioman state seat was postponed following the death of Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Md Yunus Ramli earlier today.

Pahang EC director Zamree Hamli said that the voting process for the Rompin parliamentary seat as well as the Muadzam Shah and Bukit Ibam state seats will go on as usual.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said they had received the election writ on Md Yunus’ death from the Rompin returning officer today.

This means that polling for the Tioman state seat will be held simultaneously with that of the Padang Serai parliamentary seat, whose candidate M. Karupaiya, also its incumbent, died last Wednesday. 

“Candidates for Tioman whose names had been confirmed earlier still need to be present at the nomination centre for the purpose of drawing lots to determine their position on the ballot paper.

Prospective candidates wanting to contest the election must submit their filled-up and checked nomination papers at the nomination centre designated by the EC,” he said, adding that postal ballot applications are open from today till November 22.

Md Yunus, 61, died about 3.30am today at the Rompin Hospital. The contest for the Tioman state seat was supposed to be a five-cornered fight between Md Yunus, Sulaiman Bakar (Independent), Osman A. Bakar (Pejuang), Mohd Fadzli Mohd Ramly (Pakatan Harapan) and Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain (Barisan Nasional). – The Vibes, November 19, 2022
