KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has suffered a humbling defeat at the hands of his protege Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari in Gombak. 

Azmin, who is running under the Perikatan Nasional banner, secured 59,538 votes – 12,739 short of his Pakatan Harapan rival’s ballot count of 72,267. 

Gombak has a total of 206,744 registered voters.

The result puts an end to Azmin’s hold in Gombak, the constituency he won for three consecutive terms since 2008. 

Amirudin’s victory means he will now make his Parliament debut, having been an assemblyman in Selangor for three terms. 

The PKR vice-president won the Gombak seat in a five-cornered fight, which also features Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, Gerakan Tanah Air’s Datuk Dr Aziz Jamaludin. and independent Zulkifli Ahmad. 

In the 2018 election, Azmin, who contested under the PKR banner then, won the constituency with a staggering majority of 48,721 votes. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
