KUALA LUMPUR – UAC Bhd, the company behind the lorry that caused an accident leading to a pregnant woman’s miscarriage, is conducting an internal review of the incident.
The company also said it was reaching out to the affected families and is also cooperating with the authorities investigating the accident that occurred in Gerik, Perak, on October 29.
However, in revealing the date of the accident, the company drew flak from social media users on its Facebook page where it posted its statement today, for only commenting on the incident now when it happened in October.
“Your statement is a joke, the action should be taken after the accident immediately, not after a few months until the issue become viral,” said one Facebook user named Tan Yee Chong.
“Y (Why) now only apologise? Because already viral?” asked another social media user named Daniel Lin.
UAC, which manufactures fibre cement building materials, issued its statement today after a viral dash cam video of an accident was shared widely since two days ago.
It acknowledged the video and photos that have been circulating since December 11 showing a trailer cornering a bend at high-speed, causing goods to fly off its back and smash into an oncoming car. The incident also caused the car recording the dash cam video to overturn.
The accident caused severe injuries to a woman who miscarried her 34-week-old baby.
“UAC wishes to express our heartfelt condolences to the families involved in this tragic accident. We are deeply saddened, and our hearts go out to the victims who have suffered inconsiderable losses and injuries. We are with you in this time of grief,” its statement said.
It said its internal review is also underway, and called the accident “an exceptional case in the 60-year history of our establishment”.
“We are assessing and will further tighten the operation guidelines and procedures, as well as put in place any recommendation to ensure that such (an) incident will not happen again.”
Transport Ministry earlier today said he had instructed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) to take immediate action against the company and the truck driver by suspending its operating permit.
The truck driver had reportedly fled the scene but was eventually arrested at a roadblock in Jeli, Kelantan. – The Vibes, December 13, 2022
