KUALA LUMPUR – Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid has brushed aside accusations of partaking in the “London Move”, an alleged plot to overthrow the unity government.

While confirming that he was in London recently, the former Padang Terap MP denied meeting other Umno leaders to discuss bringing down the unity government led by Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“As someone who holds a senior position (in Umno), I was part of the meeting held to determine whether we should join the unity government.

“I have already agreed with the party’s decision (to form a unity government). Why are some people trying to involve my name in the London Move?” he questioned.

Mahdzir, who is also the former rural development minister, said this during an interview session at the 2022 Umno general assembly here today.

He also alluded that such rumours do not faze him, saying: “Wherever I go, there are talks of a move.”

“London is also too far away for a move (to take place), compared to the Kajang Move,” he joked, referring to the 2014 plot which saw PKR attempting to replace the late Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim with Anwar for the Selangor menteri besar post.

It was earlier reported that speculations were rife about two Umno vice-presidents meeting in London to hatch nefarious plans aimed at taking down party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also a deputy prime minister.

Fellow Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has similarly denied the rumours, insisting that he was on holiday with his family in the United Arab Emirates when the move supposedly took place.

Besides that, Mahdzir assured the people that there is “nothing to worry about” regarding the stability of the unity government, as long as the government remains true to its promises to citizens.

“The people want good policies and the government must deliver what it has promised.

“If everything goes according to plan, there is no need to worry…nothing can disturb (the unity government),” he added. – The Vibes, January 11, 2023
