GEORGE TOWN – Eight hawker stalls at Astaka in City Stadium here were destroyed by fire early this morning.

There was no loss of life reported from the 7.30am incident which drew a crowd of spectators as firemen rushed promptly to the scene.

Perak Road Fire and Rescue station head A’Azelan Hassan said a team of firefighters arrived 15 minutes after a distress call was received.

“The fire tore through the hawker food preparation area and the damages incurred will cause about a 50% loss to the hawkers,” he told the media.

The cause of the fire is believed to be short-circuited wiring, although A'Azelan said fire forensic investigators will still be ascertaining the actual cause of the blaze.

The hawker stalls are popular among office workers around the Dato Keramat and Perak Road enclave. – The Vibes, January 18, 2023
