JOHOR BARU – In light of the Himpunan Pemuda Islam Terengganu (Himpit) rally on Friday, which saw individuals marching with shields and sharp weapons, the Home Ministry warned the public to avoid actions that could threaten public peace and safety.
In a statement, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the rally organised by PAS has resulted in public unease, given that several state elections are on the horizon, resulting in a tense political atmosphere.
“The public is aware that the country is facing challenges with regards to 3R politics (race, religion, and royalty) that have yet to be settled after the last general election.
“I request everyone to take into account sensitivities and remain responsible to avoid actions that could result in an even more heated situation,” Saifuddin said.
Touching on videos of the rally that were posted on social media, Saifuddin said a number of these uploads featured religious, war-themed chants, inviting the home minister to question if the march was intended to stoke battle spirits.
“Surely, any action that displays symbols or weaponry and expresses a military spirit is extremely unnecessary and invites public anxiety,” Saifuddin added.
Yesterday, news portals reported that Terengganu PAS members marched on the streets in Setiu clad in body armour and brandishing swords, shields, bows, and arrows.
Based on videos on TikTok, the event was attended by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and PAS Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.
According to Terengganu police, authorities were aware of the rally but were not informed that participants would be carrying weapons.
Police added that the organisers of the event were called in to assist with investigations and authorities are determining if any laws were broken during the rally. – The Vibes, February 20, 2023
