KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu has accepted Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan’s resignation as the party’s information chief, effective today, said party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said this was to “set a standard” following corruption charges brought against Wan Saiful yesterday.
“I agreed to accept his resignation, which will be effective today,” Free Malaysia Today quoted Muhyiddin as telling the media in Parliament following a meeting with Wan Saiful earlier today.
Wan Saiful told a press conference this morning of his offer to resign as Bersatu information chief, but had said would leave it to the Bersatu leadership to decide.
He had said that even though he felt the charges were politically motivated, he wanted to show that he was “different” from the “court cluster”, in reference to Umno politicians who hold positions while facing corruption charges.
The Tasek Gelugor MP was yesterday charged with soliciting and receiving bribes worth RM6.9 million to help a private firm to secure a central spine road government contract worth RM232 million in 2022.
He and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad are the first two people charged for corruption in relation to the Jana Wibawa scheme introduced by Muhyiddin when he was prime minister.
Adam, who was charged yesterday in and today, faces a total of four counts of soliciting and bribery over projects under the scheme.
In one set of charges, he is accused of receiving between 3.5% and 7% of the value of a road project worth RM47.8 million, and also RM500,000 as inducement for helping a private company obtain the project.
In the second set of charges, he is accused of receiving RM4.1 million to help companies secure projects. – The Vibes, February 22, 2023
