KUALA LUMPUR – Islamic scholar Tan Sri Mohd Kamal Hassan died at 2.27am today. He was 80.

Kamal, who is the former rector of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), reportedly died due to complications linked to a surgery.

He is known to write on philosophy, religion, social issues and education. 

Some of his popular works included The Encyclopedia of Malaysia: Religions and Beliefs, Islamic Identity Crisis in the Muslim Community in Contemporary Malaysia, and Islamic Studies in Contemporary Southeast Asia: General Observations.

He was born in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, in 1942 and later attended the Sultan Ismail School in Kota Baru. 

He received his first degree in Islamic Studies from Universiti Malaya in 1965 and earned a master’s and doctorate degrees from Columbia University, New York. 

He was appointed to head the Usuluddin and Philosophy Department in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1979.

Kamal began his career at IIUM as Shaikh al-Kulliyyah in 1983. Later, he became the first dean of the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences and IIUM rector from 1999 to 2006.
