Flash floods sweep away car in S’wak’s Bintangor town

MIRI – A car was swept away by flash floods in Bintangor in Meradong district, Sarikei early this morning as heavy rain continues in southern and central Sarawak today.

The 3am incident at Jalan Skim B Bintangor did not result in any casualties as the driver and passenger managed to escape, said the state Fire and Rescue Department.

“Our Bintangor fire station received an emergency alert from police that a car had been swept away by flash floods.

“We rushed a rescue team to the site and found that a Honda City was swept away in the flood waters about 50m from the roadside.

“Two men in the vehicle managed to escape and our rescue team pulled them to safety using rescue ropes.

“The two men said they were travelling to Bintangor town when they were caught in fast-flowing waters,” said the department in a statement.

In the meantime, floods have hit Kuching, Bau, Serian, and Siburan districts in southern Sarawak.

So far, 282 people have been evacuated to six flood-relief centres. – The Vibes, March 1, 2023
