KUALA LUMPUR – MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has lodged a police report over phone calls he allegedly received from a businessman over an issue relating to the importation of eggs from India.

In a Facebook post today, Wee said the report was lodged at 1am yesterday at the Cheras district police headquarters.

The report follows the businessman apparently not taking up Wee’s earlier issued challenge urging him to lodge a police report after the entrepreneur denied calling him twice on March 13.

“Since he failed to do so, I lodged a police report as I had promised before,” Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, said in the post.

“I hope no one will use the name of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for any unbecoming or intimidating acts against an MP who is granted immunity in the Dewan Rakyat under Section 63 of the federal constitution,” he added.

Previously, Wee had alleged in the Dewan Rakyat that the businessman had called him in what appeared to be an attempt to “silence” him over his recent questioning of the country’s decision to import eggs from India amid a shortage in Malaysia.

Recounting the purported phone conversation, Wee said he received the first call via WhatsApp at 9.51am on March 13.

The call lasted 33 seconds before it dropped due to a weak signal. A second call was then made at 9.52am via the mobile line, this time lasting seven minutes.

Wee said that the individual who called him also claimed to have purportedly discussed the issue with the PMO and agreed that Wee should make a statement to resolve the matter out of court.

The PMO subsequently issued a statement, warning that it would take legal action against anyone misusing its name or position

Later, businessman Deepak Jaikishan issued a statement denying ever contacting Wee to demand a retraction of the latter’s remarks on the importation of eggs.

Deepak claimed he did not even have Wee’s phone number, and said he would be consulting his lawyers to pursue legal action. – The Vibes, March 23, 2023
