KUALA LUMPUR – Muda vice-president Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier has stated that the culture of “victim blaming” has no place in our country, particularly if practised by a cabinet minister.
In a statement referring to Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, she said an influential individual sitting in the cabinet should have a clear response towards sensitive issues such as sexual harassment.
“When the minister himself questions why swimmer Pandelela Rinong revealed her sexual harassment encounter now, it’s as if he is not supporting individuals who are willing to speak out,” Thanussha said.
Further, she said, when someone as prominent as Pandelela can be doubted, it will take away confidence from other victims to report their sexual harassment claims.
Instead, Thanussha suggests Faizal should have asked whether there were available channels for victims to report sexual harassment complaints in the sports industry without repercussions.
Adding further, the Muda vice-president said Faizal could also make sexual harassment awareness training compulsory, given there has been several female athletes raising the issue.
“The most effective step, which can be taken is to ensure that individuals who are confirmed guilty, face tough consequences such as sacking or criminal investigations,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Thanussha also pointed out the silence from Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun on the matter, which she suggests shows the government’s lack of commitment to pass the sexual harassment bill in Parliament.
Earlier today in the Dewan Rakyat, Faizal said his comments concerning Pandelela’s revelations were taken out of context.
He said the government views matters concerning sexual harassment seriously but added that they must obtain a full and detailed explanation from Pandelela and those involved. – The Vibes, October 26, 2021
