KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has successfully undergone an elective medical procedure yesterday and is recuperating well.

The National Heart Institute (IJN), where the 96-year-old MP for Langkawi is currently admitted, stated Mahathir is fully awake and in high spirits following his procedure yesterday.

The medical procedure was carried out by a team of doctors from IJN and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, and went as planned.

“Based on his current clinical progress, he is expected to be discharged from IJN within the next few days,” it said in a statement today.

“Dr Mahathir and (wife) Tun Dr Siti Hasmah would like to express their gratitude for all the well wishes, concerns and du’a from the public.”

Dr Mahathir was admitted to IJN two days ago, just two weeks after he was discharged from the institute on December 23, where he underwent a series of medical investigations.

He was previously admitted on December 16.

The two-time prime minister suffered his first heart attack in 1989 and had two more in 2006.

A year later, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

The last time he was hospitalised was in February 2018 at IJN. – The Vibes, January 9, 2022
