KUALA LUMPUR – The land border between Singapore and Malaysia is set to be fully reopened from April 1, according to a joint statement by the prime minister’s offices of both nations.
Fully vaccinated travellers between the countries will not be required to undergo quarantine or conduct Covid-19 screenings upon arrival or departure.
“Today’s announcement reflects the good relations, cooperation, and strong relationship between both nations,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
This move comes after a telephone conversation between the two leaders in which they acknowledged the successes of their respective vaccination and Covid-19 management programmes.
Furthermore, following the success of the vaccinated travel lane between the nations, both leaders “agreed that the time has come for the respective land borders to be reopened for the fully vaccinated,” the statement read.
Earlier this month, Ismail Sabri announced that Malaysia’s transition to the endemic phase will begin on April 1.
Besides the reopening of borders, the transitional phase will also allow businesses to operate beyond 12am if their licenses permit.
Meanwhile, newly minted Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi pledged to ensure the reopening of the Malaysia-Singapore border will proceed smoothly.
“I will ensure all preparations at the Johor-Singapore border will be in good condition, given the possibility of traffic,” Onn Hafiz said in a Facebook post.
The Machap assemblyman also thanked the Malaysian and Singapore governments for their decision to resume normal travel at the border.
Onn also said he will use the border reopening as an opportunity to meet Singapore leaders as soon as possible to discuss development in both Johor and Singapore. – The Vibes, March 24, 2022
