KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Prison Department today refuted allegations that it is according special treatment to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who began his incarceration at Kajang Prison complex yesterday.

In a statement, the department denied claims of special privileges allegedly accorded to Najib, including access to better food, beds, and even air-conditioning installed in his prison cell.

“Stop spreading fake information,”' said the department in the statement posted on Facebook.

According to a Facebook user named D’eyo Adie, Najib could face VIP treatment. The user uploaded a photo of a purported upscale cell in Kajang Prison where Najib is currently serving his sentence.

The department also plastered the word “fake” over the image.

The original post by D’eyo Adie had garnered some 2,500 comments and over 4,000 likes.

This follows the jailing of Najib yesterday after the Federal Court upheld a lower court’s decision that he is guilty of all seven charges in the SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case and will have to serve his 12-year sentence.

He began serving the prison term immediately and also has to pay RM210 million in fines, becoming the first Malaysian prime minister to spend time behind bars. – The Vibes, August 24, 2022
