KOTA BARU – The Kelantan government will proceed with its controversial move to provide free buses for university students to return home and vote in the state election on Aug 12.
Caretaker menteri besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said that despite the move raising concerns, with some questioning the government’s intentions, he defended the initiative saying it was not an attempt to buy votes but rather a responsibility towards students who may lack the financial means to travel back to cast their ballots.
He emphasised that the state government was merely fulfilling its promise to the people and refuted allegations of attempting to manipulate the voting process through free transportation services.
Critics, however, argue that offering free bus transportation during election time can be seen as an attempt to gain favour with voters, especially the younger demographic who are more likely to be students.
By providing such services, the government may be perceived as trying to influence the voting decisions of these students.
Ahmad also called for clarity from the authorities regarding the matter and whether the move could be considered bribery but it has been met with scepticism.
Critics said that while the Kelantan government may argue that the free bus transportation initiative was meant to assist financially needy students, there are legitimate concerns about the potential for it to be perceived as a means to influence voters.
They said it is crucial for the authorities to be transparent and clear in their guidelines to maintain the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. – The Vibes, August 1, 2023
