THE Negeri Sembilan Dewan Keadilan dan Undang has confirmed the removal of Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad as the 16th Undang Luak Jelebu, citing alleged breaches of adat (customary) rules.

The council said the dismissal took effect on May 31, 2023, and the position of Undang Luak Jelebu is now officially vacant.

In a statement, the council said any actions or decisions made by Maarof after the effective date of his removal would not be recognised.

“The state government is instructed to act in accordance with the decisions made by the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang,” it said.

The move adds to a series of recent changes involving the traditional leadership of Negeri Sembilan’s luak system.

Earlier, the Undang Luak Sungai Ujong was also removed, while the Undang Luak Rembau was replaced, marking a period of significant transition within the state’s centuries-old customary institution.

The four Undang — representing Jelebu, Johol, Sungai Ujong and Rembau — play a key role in Negeri Sembilan’s unique adat system, including the selection of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar. – August 1, 2026
