KUALA LUMPUR – All Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs have been asked to object to calls for the 15th general election (GE15) to be held within this year, said its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement today, the former prime minister also urged present PN members in the cabinet to emphasise the coalition’s stand during cabinet meetings.

“PN is of the opinion that GE15 should not be held immediately this year as the monsoon will begin soon with floods expected to hit the country, especially the east coast states.

“Having elections during the floods certainly will affect the running of the campaign and inconvenience the people,” he said.

The government, he opined, should focus on preparations to face the flood season as well as focus on the country’s recovery process post-pandemic.

“The people are currently burdened with inflation, increase in price of goods and the value drop of the ringgit in addition to a slow recovery process.

“The solution to these issues must be fully attended to by the government through Budget 2023,” he added.

Muhyiddin’s call comes despite Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob stating that political parties have no say and cannot influence the prime minister in presenting a suitable date to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament.

Amidst increasing pressure from certain quarters to hold a general election by year-end despite the monsoon season, Ismail Sabri maintained that, as head of government, he has the full prerogative to advise the king on the appropriate date for Parliament to be dissolved.  – The Vibes, October 4, 2022.
