KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) humbling defeat at the just-concluded 15th general election (GE15) should be a collective responsibility of all its leaders, said Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
Bung, who successfully defended his Kinabatangan seat yesterday, said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should not take the sole blame for the result.
“I don’t think we have reached that point yet,” he said when asked if it is reasonable for the party to push for Zahid’s resignation.
“We will discuss it, but all Umno leaders must take responsibility because this (election result) is the political decision of the rakyat.
“If (Zahid) is told to resign, everyone else must resign too, not just the president. And that includes me.”
Bung Moktar said this after attending Umno’s political bureau meeting at its headquarters here today, chaired by Zahid. According to official results by the Election Commission, BN only secured 30 parliamentary seats in GE15, its worst-ever outing in an election.
However, no single coalition has secured a simple majority of 112 seats to form the government.
Asked whether Umno and BN are currently considering cooperating with any party to be part of the administration, Bung, who is also Sabah Umno liaison chief, said the coalition would decide on the matter.
“We have not decided to join any coalition, there’s no decision yet. We will have more discussions.
“This is our worst election performance in history, we must accept this fact. But it’s okay, because we have offered stability and prosperity, but the rakyat has rejected us.” – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
