KUCHING – A downpour since early this morning has caused flash floods in Kuching city and Kota Samarahan, forcing motorists to carefully navigate through flooded parts of the roads.
Among the areas reported to be hit by flash floods include Mile 3 Roundabout, Rock Road, Taman Desa Wira, Padang Merdeka, Uni Garden, and Taman Muara Tuang.
The Mile 3 Roundabout underpass was also inundated, with some cars seen having difficulties passing through the rising floodwaters.
According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rain and strong winds were expected over Sarawak in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, and Miri until 2pm today.
Meanwhile, Kg Long Kajang in Belaga district experienced the “worst flood of the year”, said national PKR council member Abun Sui Anyit.
He said despite it not being the year-end monsoon season, the village comprising 23 doors with 143 residents in Linau was severely flooded.
“Does this have something to do with the logging activities actively taking place in the affected area?” he asked in a statement.
However, he said the government was currently arranging for assistance to be delivered to the village.
“Village chief Giau Bajan has expressed his hopes that the relevant authorities will quickly provide assistance to the villagers, who are mostly classified under the B40 income group.
“The plantations of the Penan community were also flooded previously, so we hope the Agriculture Department will lessen the burden of the villagers given the ordeal they are facing.” – Borneo Post Online, March 18, 2023
