PERHILITAN confirmed an incident where an elephant went on a rampage and damaged a road user's vehicle near Sungai Lebey near the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway Memorial (JRTB), last night.
Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director, Yusoff Shariff, said a complaint regarding the incident was received from four members of the Civil Defence Force (APM) who arrived at the scene at 8.40 pm.
Based on the complaint, the incident involved six elephants, including a male one.
Gerik District Police Chief, Zulkifli Mahmood, said in the incident, a man faced a terrifying moment when the car he was driving was attacked by a group of wild elephants.
He said that upon arriving at the scene of the incident, the 39-year-old victim, who was driving a Toyota Vios, stopped his vehicle when he noticed a group of elephants crossing the road before the vehicle behind him began honking.
The driver of the car was not injured as he managed to escape.
"The victim stopped the car and turned off the lights, but heard a vehicle horn from behind before three elephants suddenly approached his car.
"The driver, in a panic, managed to get out of the car to save himself. After the herd of elephants left, the complainant went to the police station to file a complaint," he said.
As a result of the elephant attack, the complainant's car was damaged at the front and back as well as on the right and left sides.
