KUALA LUMPUR – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd (HSB), which manages Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB), said it will not hesitate to take legal action against any parties that disseminate false information against their firms and their respective directors.
In a statement published on KL Tower’s official Facebook page today, the two firms said all business deals relating to the building were done according to the proper processes.
“We would like to assert that we take the spread of such false and/or defamatory information very seriously and will conduct further investigations into the same. Legal action will be taken against parties involved, where we will claim losses and damages.
“We will also be engaging the Communications and Digital Ministry with regard to this matter to set the record straight.
“We would like to stress that all dealings with regard to Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd had all been done above board and through proper due diligence,” said the statement signed by the management of HSB and MKLSB.
This follows a viral social media post earlier this week by Twitter user @FreeMsian highlighting the controversial full ownership transfer of the iconic tower by MKLSB to HSB.
The transfer of all of MKLSB’s 10 million shares was recorded to have taken place on October 31, when Tan Sri Annuar Musa was the communications and multimedia minister.
The user had questioned TM’s decision to sell off these shares despite KL Tower making revenue of RM66 million and RM25 million in net profit in 2019.
Annuar has since vehemently denied that he has any involvement in the dealings while Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he views the issue seriously and is closely monitoring the matter.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has also confirmed that his agency is looking into the KL Tower deal.
In a statement yesterday, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) said KL Tower is owned by the Malaysian government while the operations and maintenance of the tower is granted under a concession.
TM, via its wholly owned MKLSB, had undertaken the concession since 1996. However, as part of its business transformation programme, TM is now focusing on strengthening its core business of telecommunications and technology.
After due consideration of the change in the business nature of the tower from telecommunications services to tourism and hospitality, TM decided in October 2021 not to renew the MKLSB concession and had informed the government accordingly. – The Vibes, December 30, 2022
