KUALA LUMPUR – Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan will meet with the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to explain the no-contest motion for the party’s top two positions that was passed at its recently concluded annual general assembly (AGM).
According to FMT, Ahmad said he, along with Umno’s lawyers, will meet RoS and explain the procedures leading up to the motion being passed, stressing that it was done in accordance with the party’s constitution.
“If the delegates did not agree, they could have stood up to express their disagreement,” Ahmad was quoted as saying.
“It can be said that more than 90% of the delegates expressed their agreement by raising their hands and even standing. There were only a few dozen delegates who raised their hands or stood up to express their disapproval.
“Therefore, this became a decision reached at the general assembly. It is therefore an order, or party policy, that all Umno members must abide by,” he said as reported by FMT.
Ahmad further explained that there was no breach of procedures as the motion was allowed to be tabled by the party’s permanent chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin during the annual general meeting (AGM), as per his powers as described under Clause 21.1 of the AGM rules.
This comes about after two Umno members filed a complaint with RoS yesterday, claiming that the motion that was passed was in breach of the party’s constitution.
They claimed that the no-contest motion is in violation of Article 9.3 of Umno’s constitution, which detailed that all positions, including the top two positions of president and deputy president, must be open to contest every three years.

They also claimed that the motion was in breach of party procedures as any ad hoc motion introduced requires the party Supreme Council to explain it to the delegates and for the motion to be a matter of public interest. – The Vibes, January 21, 2023
