GEORGE TOWN – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Sg Dua assemblyman Datuk Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor will remain Penang opposition leader despite the coalition being a partner in the federal unity government.
“Under Section 4A(4), the speaker is empowered to decide who is the best candidate in an event of an ambiguity,” Penang Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang told the assembly today.
He added that the assembly will be dissolved to make way for a state election later this year.
Yusoff is also a Penang Umno committee member.
Complications arose when Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Khaliq Mehtab Mohd Ishaq (Bertam) was nominated as the new opposition leader.
But he was among the four PN assemblymen who were expelled from the assembly yesterday due to the state’s anti-hopping law.
The other three were Dr Afif Bahardin (Seberang Jaya), Zulkifli Ibrahim (Sg Acheh), and Zolkifly Md Lazim (Telok Bahang).
However, Khaliq slammed the move to retain Yusoff as opposition leader because BN is part of the unity government.
The sole opposition member is PAS’ Yusni Mat Piah (Penaga). – The Vibes, March 7, 2023
